With the advent of new technology came the creation of solar powered driveway lighting. Solar driveway lighting is a group of small LED lights powered by solar energy. In the day, attached solar panels soak up the sunlight and use the energy to charge lithium batteries, which then power the LED lights in the night. Solar driveway lighting was only made possible by the invention of smaller and more efficient solar panels, better and brighter bulbs, and batteries with more storage capacity.
Available options to light the driveway with solar lights include surface, flush, or clip mounted driveway lights. Surface mounted driveway solar energized lighting is installed directly on the tarmac of your driveway, leaving them sticking up about a half-inch or so. Surface mounted lights also cast directional light depending on where they are placed. Flush mounted lights means that the lights are right on level with the driveway. Installing flush mounted lights are easier to install during the construction when the tarmac is wet, otherwise you would have to dig into the driveway and place the lights inside to achieve the flush look. Clip on lights, or fence driveway lights are solar lighting strips that you can clip onto the fence lining your driveway. These are only useful if you have a fence that runs parallel to your driveway. 
Solar lighting has its advantages. For one, you will be going green when purchasing solar light and helping conserve the available energy in the earth. Secondly, they save power. Third, they are easy to install. Solar powered light is a cheap alternative to conventional lights. Additionally the LED bulbs used in solar energized lights are brighter than florescent and incandescent bulbs, which also use more electricity. So when you use solar light, you help save the earth, cut back on your electrical bills, and save time and money on the installment, while getting a product that is almost twice as good as those that were traditionally used.
The main disadvantage to getting solar driveway lights is the initial cost. Of course, you reduce on the cost of installation because there are no wires to place to provide electricity, but still the cost of buying new solar lighting as opposed to the traditional kind is significantly more. Aside from the high cost of solar equipment, the location of the driveway lighting can have a big impact on its performance. In other words, these lights will work best where they receive direct sunlight. It is not always possible, or convenient, however, to remove all obstacles that block the sunlight where you plan to install the lights.
Another disadvantage that should be taken into consideration when choosing to go solar is that solar lights only work when the sun is shining. Although more modern solar panels in driveway lights have technology that increases the efficiency in which the sunlight is absorbed, stormy weather and dark rain clouds will still adversely affect the performance of your solar powered driveway lighting. All in all, though, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of solar energized lights.
Installing solar lights in your driveway can range from easy do it yourself lights, to more difficult installations that you would probably want done by professionals, depending on what kind of lights you are installing. Earlier we touched on different kinds of solar lights, and now we will look into how they are installed. Clip on lights are by far the most convenient lights to put up yourself, much like hanging up your Christmas lights. Flush mounted lights require more skill and should be left to professionals. You can install surface mounted lights if you are the handyman type. All you need to do is first survey your driveway, measure where you want the lights, and with the use of hard cement lay them flat on the driveway. Be sure you have placed them where they will receive sufficient sunlight, and you have successfully finished installing your solar lights!
Solar driveway lights are typically more expensive than a standard, low voltage light. However, they have several advantages; solar lights are notorious for being almost completely maintenance-free, as they require no cords or extra batteries. The entire system is self-contained with its own small solar panel and battery back. During the day, the solar panels will extract energy from the sun to provide adequate light at night. These are great for those who live in areas that are usually sunny, but present serious disadvantages for those who do not; solar lights will not be lit at night if they do not get enough sun during the day.
